1989 BMW R100GS - Ready to take you to Tierra del Fuego

61,000 miles

This classic R100GS "Bumblebee" is ready to take you on any adventure you throw at it. From a local day trip, to an around-the-world odyssey.

I purchased this bike back in 2005 (I am the third owner) to get into adventure motorcycling, starting with a two month trip to Mexico, departing from New York. I chose this exact bike because it doesn't have a fixed faring (the headlight moves with the handlebars) and because it isn't as mechanically complicated as later models. It doesn't have fuel injection or any complex electronics. Definitely no onboard computer. In the event of a breakdown in the middle of nowhere I wanted to be able to work on it myself or with the help of any mechanic - auto or motorcycle. This bike doesn't need to be hooked up to any complex diagnostic equipment.

This bike is mechanically very sound, and it has been ridden as it was intended to. It's no garage queen. It's not stock and has some bumps and bruises consistent with a bike that's meant to be taken on adventures. That said, it's never been in any accidents nor has it been laid down. I would - without hesitation - get on it and take it to South America tomorrow (if life would allow for it).

Located about 40 miles due north of New York City. I can help arrange shipping if necessary.

Here are some highlights:

Registered, inspected and insured, with a clear NY title

New cylinders, piston, rings and valves at around 53,000 miles (Recent leak-down test result was 3%!)

New driveshaft (Replaced as a precaution before Mexico trip. The original is in excellent shape, and is included.) and fork springs and seals at around 45,000 miles

Corbin seat in excellent condition, with backrest

Adjustable Ohlins shock, recently rebuilt

Motorrad Elektrik high output voltage regulator and diode board

Aluminum Jesse Luggage panniers (These are legendary and now nearly impossible to find for this bike. Cost almost $1000 new. Will not separate.)

Stock stainless muffler, catalytic replaced with stainless Keihan "Y" pipe

Custom steel auxiliary lighting bracket (Made this with a friend who is an airplane mechanic. Bolts to the upper fork brace. Has PIAA driving and fog lights mounted to it. Made so that lights are protected if bike tips over, which can happen when fully loaded and on uneven terrain. Currently not mounted, but have all wiring and relays.)

Touratech oil cooler relocation kit (Moves oil cooler from crash bar to a more protected location in front of gas tank.)

Touratech bar risers

Touratech bash plate (Larger than the original, which is also included.)

Larger tail light (Came with the bike. Original included.)

Has both clock and tachometer (These were optional when purchasing new. Came to me without the tach, which I sourced and added.)

Flip-a-lever friction throttle lock

Side-stand foot extender plate (Gives it a larger footprint so it doesn't sink into dirt as easily, and bike doesn't lean as much.)

Additional electrical accessory port on handlebars (Original is under battery on the left.)

Replacement fairing (Saw it on eBay and picked it up, just in case.)

Wolfman Luggage tank bag and tank panniers, all in great shape

Misc. extras: clutch cable (routed next to existing), rear brake cable, brake and clutch levers, light bulb kit, mini air pump, puncture repair kit, etc.

Stacks of receipts and all bills of sale
